Paul Luvera, Sr., was honored as the Anacortes Chamber of Commerce's "Citizen of the Year" in 1980. The ANACORTES AMERICAN ran an article with a photo of Luvera working on a totem pole. The description inscribed on a plaque present to Luvera read, "A living legend in his own time, whose accomplishments span six decades."
Luvera became a member of the chamber in 1924, served as chamber president in 1937, and was chairman of the chamber board for several years. He served as a state senator from 1953-1957.
Past civic accomplishments cited by the chamber include Luvera's role as chairman of the Marineers Pageant, leadership in the community drive to build Fidalgo Pool, and a key role in the building of the road up Mt. Erie.
