On Friday, January 2, 1953, Volume 1, Number 8 of THE SAN JUAN JOURNAL was published in Anacortes. The headline was, 'NEW SEWERS NEAR." A photo which covered nearly half of the front page was of a convertible which spun out on the icy highway near Deception Pass and smashed into a guard rail; the driver was thrown out of the car and died of head injuries.
