Article in the ANACORTES AMERICAN newspaper on Thursday, November 7, 1946 reads: "FIELD DEDICATION FRIDAY NIGHT -- Friday Night, To Be Historic Event In Anacortes, Huge Crowd Expected To Be On Hand For Occasion. The memory of some twenty Anacortes men who gave their lives in the service of their country will be perpetuated for the future this Friday evening, when the War Memorial Field dedication and the Anacortes Mount Vernon football game are held here under the lights.
A program to suitably dedicate the field will be held during the evening highlighted by the appearance here of the Bellingham American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps, State of Washington champions in their fields.
In addition the principal speaker of the evening will be Doctor T. J. Rasmussen of Bellingham, National Committeeman of the American Legion.
The Bellingham Eagles Drill Team, state champions, will participate in the festivities, and there will be numerous other stunts and events all under the direction of the Causland Post of the American Legion of Anacortes.
The football clash between the Anacortes Sea Hawks and the Mount Vernon Bulldogs will highlight the evening.
The Bulldogs and the Sea Hawks both rate as strong teams this year and with the traditional rivalry between the two elevens a "bang-up" game can be looked for.
Impressive, yet spirited is the program that the Legion Committee is working for in the thought that the memory of those killed in the service of their country will be honored in a ceremony fitting their sacrifices."
