Scope & Content The February 25, 1998 annual edition of "PICTORIAL History of Skagit County" was published by Skagit Valley ARGUS and Burlington ARGUS. The historical photographs came from Roger Fox, a barber in Mt. Vernon, and are from the Burlington and Mt. Vernon area. The chronological history, which runs from Behring's exploration in 1730 through to 1997 also mainly records mainly events from Burlington and Mt. Vernon. Anacortes is mentioned in 1890 (incorporation), 1891 (electric train), 1929 (gets water from Skagit River at Avon), 1954 (Shell refinery), 1957 (new highway built), 1963 (Scott Paper Mill reactivated), 1972 (expansion of Texaco refinery), 1988 (oil spills near Shannon Point and Texaco refinery). There were also frequent earthquakes and Skagit River floods mentioned.
