Two designs for 24 street banners on Commercial Avenue were created in June 2008 by artist Alfred Currier. Spearheaded by the Chamber of Commerce's Beautification Committee, the banners were hung on every other light pole from 12th Street to 34th Street. The money came from the Tourism Promotion Fund from the countywide hotel/motel tax. Currier is quoted as saying, "The idea was to have a blaze of color as you came into Anacortes." The designs are almost abstract maritime sailing designs with spinnakers. They were eight feet tall so as to be easier to see than the previous banners, and were displayed from June to November.
