D.IV.013 - Taylor Hotel taxi

Taxi, front of Taylor Hotel. Driving the horse-drawn taxi is Napolean Bellan. Taylor Hotel was located at 1st/Commercial on the west side where the Port Dock building is now . Built in1890, it had 90 rooms and dining accommodations. Passenger steamers which arrived from and sailed to all points of Puget Sound, Alaska and California, docked at the wharf in front of the hotel.

Team bringing logs to mill in Anacortes. Once logs were removed from forest stands, horses transported them to one of Anacortes' numerous mills. Within months after the city's incorporation in 1891, it boasted three sawmills and two sash and door factories.

Logging operation on Fidalgo Island. Group of men sitting on pile of logs, team of horses at rear. Horses succeeded the ox teams of the 1870s and 1880s. Logs were hauled over skid roads to the log chute at the island's shore.Several local farmers raised prized draft horses, such as Percherons, whose strength and agility were prized in logging operations. Note the evidence of forest fire in this photo.

The Anacortes Fire Hall and City Hall building was built in 1891 located at 1107 5th Street, on south side of 5th Street between O Avenue and N Avenue which also housed the jail and Anacortes City Hall. This view shows the Fire Department out in force in front of the patriotically decorated building for the 4th of July.
