Caption Elmer Gandy Evangelist Party
Description WF 2484-2498 is a series of photographs of the Gandy family. These images evidently were taken for publicity purposes. This photo shows a placard that Brady assembled on nine of these photos; note Brady's Anacortes Studio label at right lower corner. The placard states, "Elmer Gandy Evangelistic Party; Mrs. Gandy, mezzo-soprano, piano, young people's worker; Rev. Gandy, preacher, artist, guitar, baritone; Ramona, steel guitar; Esther, accordion, piano." The similarity of the name Elmer Gandy to Sinclair Lewis' 1927 novel ELMER GANTRY is hard not to overlook. Sinclair's novel satirized religious hypocrisy and bigotry by focusing on a morally corrupt evangelist named Elmer Gantry. The novel caused a huge uproar and the book was banned in numerous American cities. It is interesting to speculate if Brady's photos of Elmer Gandy depict a man who took on the slightly-altered name of Sinclair Lewis' corrupt preacher in an attempt to provide a living, breathing version of an evangelist that was the antithesis of what Elmer Grantry represented.
