Caption Grand Army of the Republic
Description The Grand Army of the Republic was organized in 1866 as a fraternal organization of Union veterans of the Civil War. Dedicated to the commemoration of dead comrades, the G.A.R. created "Decoration Day" on the last Sunday of each May to remember those from the Union Army who had fallen; by the early 1900s, the event became known as Memorial Day. Anacortes' chapter of the G.A.R., General Emory Post 68, formed in 1891 and was named for General William Emory (1811-1887) who commanded the Nineteenth Army Corps during the Civil War; see the 7-16-1891, ANACORTES AMERICAN. Emory's picture is inset into this photo in the upper right hand corner. The 8-20-1919, paper reported that Post 68 was hosting the annual convention of the Northwest Veterans Association in Anacortes. Veterans from "all parts of the Northwest" showed up for the event. Many veterans of the Civil War lived out their lives on Fidalgo and Guemes islands. A partial list includes: William Allard (Confederate), John Arges, Alexander Barron, W. Brothers, Roberts Chitwood, Thomas Clarke, A. Judson Crookham (served in the Union Army 1862-1865 and was a prisoner at Andersonville), Jeremiah Currier, D. J.
