Caption Smilik Bay Oyster beds
Description First attempts to begin oyster production in Similk Bay began in 1905. The 6-8-1905 ANACORTES AMERICAN reported, "Oyster culture at Similk Bay is now an assured fact and much more of value would take place there were it not for the fact that land owners are asking in extortion for a few acres of land." Rod Turner, who was associated with Similk Bay Development Company, started the Similk Bay Oyster Company c. 1932. He is probably the man in the photo, according to Wallie Funk on April 5, 2014.
