Caption Elmer Gandy Evangelist Party
Description WF 2484-2498 is a series of photographs of the Gandy family. These images evidently were taken for publicity purposes. This photo shows Mrs. Gandy and the daughters playing their instruments. Gandy is standing by his painting of a church in the mountains. The similarity of the name Elmer Gandy to Sinclair Lewis' 1927 novel ELMER GANTRY is hard not to overlook. Sinclair's novel satirized religious hypocrisy and bigotry by focusing on a morally corrupt evangelist named Elmer Gantry. The novel caused a huge uproar and the book was banned in numerous American cities. It is interesting to speculate if Brady's photos of Elmer Gandy depict a man who took on the slightly-altered name of Sinclair Lewis' corrupt preacher in an attempt to provide a living, breathing version of an evangelist that was the antithesis of what Elmer Grantry represented.
