Caption Coast Guard Station 12 boat in Canoe Pass
Description View of Coast Guard patrol boat in Canoe Pass prior to the 1934 construction of Deception Pass Bridge. Vessels running illegal liquor from Canada into Washington frequented the waters near Fidalgo and Whidbey, as well as the rest of the San Juan Islands. ANACORTES AMERICAN articles throughout the 1920s reported the Coast Guard's pursuit of "rum runners" who often dumped their loads on Whidbey Island. Deception Pass was a frequent route taken by the smugglers. Note that the color image of this black and white photo was probably hand-colored by Brady and possibly sold as a local calendar photo.
