This image from the 1947 Marineers' Pageant is of Queen Doris Springer and her court, including pages, riding on the official float.
Buildings are, from left to right: Goodwin-Benedict-Havekost Building built in 1890, Snyder's Pharmacy, People's Bank in the Bank of Commerce Building. The Bank of Commerce began in the Platt (Wells) Building in 1904 and moved to the southwest corner of Commercial and 5th in 1926 after William McCracken constructed that building, and the one just south of it occupied by Snyder's Pharmacy. In 1937, at the height of the Depression, the Bank of Commerce closed. The building remained vacant for two years and in 1939 was occupied by People's National Bank. Snyder's Pharmacy was owned by Fred Snyder, who came to Anacortes in 1904 and apparently went into a partnership with John Douglass who purchased the H. P. Schmidt Pharmacy in 1909. The 4-22-1915 ANACORTES AMERICAN reported, "John Douglass and Fred Snyder of Eureka Pharmacy buy the South Side Drug Store, formerly operated by Eugene Culver who will move to Bellingham. Douglass and Snyder will move their new drug store to recently vacated Johnson's Grocery at 20th and Commercial: will call it: "Eureka Pharmacy Jr." By 1917 Snyder was in business for himself at 702 Commercial and by 1921 he had moved to 502 Commercial.
This was the first pageant held since 1941 and it appears the coronation was quite lavish. Doris Springer and her princesses Bonita Cross and Norine Oldow won a trip to California as reported by the 7-31-1947 ANACORTES AMERICAN. "Pageant Winners Holly wood Trip" "Queen Doris Springer, Princesses Norine Oldow and Bonita Cross head to Los Angeles aboard new United Air Lines DC-4 plane on its maiden voyage. Will participate in programs at Seattle, Portland, and Los Angeles air fields inaugurating the service. Have a full agenda in Los Angeles." For photos of their departure, see WF 0339, 0340. Other candidates were Joyce Neville, Leona Andrich, and Marilyn Morrison. For complete series of this coronation, see WF 1609-1626.
