|Description||Charles W. Beale, Sr., 1831-1923. Charles Beale, a native of Virginia, crossed the Oregon Trail in 1851 and came to Fidalgo Island in 1859. He claimed land on March's Point, site of the oil refinery, but did not permanently settle there until the late 1860s. Beale and his Indian wife Julia raised eight children together. At his death in 1923, Beale was hailed as Skagit County's "oldest pioneer."|
