Caption Madrona Point at Similk Beach
Description View of a cabin or home at "Madrona Point" on Similk Beach Resort. Brady postcard view labeled, "#51, Madrona Point - Similk Beach -Near Anacortes, Wash., Brady". Much of this land, an ancient canoe portage for Indians in the region, was first claimed by George Inslee c1870 was sold to Henry and Elizabeth White in 1873. [See p. 28-29 FIRST VIEWS: AN EARLY HISTORY OF SKAGIT COUNTY, by Theresa Trebon]. In 1927, Similk Bay Development Company purchased this site for development as a resort site, complete with golf course and cabins. They hired a nationally known golf course architect from Philadelphia to plan the site, which required extensive draining to remove water. The 02/08/1828 ANACORTES AMERICAN reported, "Extensive improvements underway at Similk Bay Summer Resort. Nine hole golf course laid out and work will begin this summer, over 4000' of water main installed." 03/24/1928 ANACORTES AMERICAN reported: "Similk Beach is being Modernized ... Similk is changing from a beautiful spot in the woods to a more beautiful place with modern conveniences meeting the American standard of living demanded by beach dwellers." 05/02/1929 ANACORTES AMERICAN reported that golf course had been completed and would be ready for play, "this week." 03/06/1930 ANACORTES AMERICAN wrote that the Similk Beach Development Company was turning over its 250-acre development, including cabins and nine-hole golf course, to a "holding company composed of Similk Beach lot owners." The article stated that the resort had invested $100,000 in improvements and now boasted "35 attractive new summer cottages, pleasure beach with 1,470" pier, cement tennis courts, 9-hole golf course, 2-1/2 miles of paved roads and electric lights." This show house was owned by Luella Slonaker according to information given by Wallie Funk on April 5, 2014.
