Caption 4th of July 1890
Description 4th of July celebration at Ocean Dock, Anacortes. Steamer SEHOME with celebrants and the Anacortes City Band. This was the first big event for the band as their instruments had just arrived in mid-June as reported by 6-26-1890 ANACORTES AMERICAN. The Bowman Hotel at Rose Point is visible in distance at center. This was one of many photos shot on July 4, 1890, as reported by the ANACORTES AMERICAN on 7-10-1890, "Photographic Views: On the fourth, Messers Booen and Ewing, the enterprising photographers of this city, were busy taking views of the most interesting points about town and along the wharves. Among the views taken were the Indian baseball team, the landing of the YOSEMITE, etc., etc." Another article in a later issue of the ANACORTES AMERICAN reads: "FOURTH OF JULY was a star-spangled event for the throbbing city of Anacortes. And in 1890 as the boom headed dizzily toward its peak, celebrities converged on the community from as far as Victoria and from throughout all Puget Sound. The first municipal band of Anacortes posed aboard the sternwheeler SEHOME as crowds thronged Ocean Dock in observance not only of Independence Day, but the first 4th of July of statehood for Washington. Along the shoreline are Amos Bowman's Rose Point Hotel and the Bowman mill, properties of Anacortes' founder."
