The May 24, 1917 edition of the GUEMES BEACHCOMBER states that [within 3 weeks] actual work will be started on the Sloan Shipyard on Guemes Island for Sloan had been awarded a contract for the building of a number of ships. The June 14, 1917 edition states that surveying the yard and laying out the ways, the railroad tracks, roads, mill and powerhouse had commenced. The June 12, 1923 edition of the GUEMES BEACHCOMBER has a headline reading: "Shipyard to be Only a Memory".
