Caption Fritz Rydberg with 85 lb. salmon
Description Photo of Fritz Rydberg holding a large salmon. Fritz was the son of Peter and Anna Carlson Rydberg, who were among the wave of Scandinavian immigrants who came to Anacortes to work in the town's lumber and fishing industries. Peter Rydberg came to Anacortes from Seattle in 1890; the following year Anna Carlson came to Anacortes to work in the Wilson Hotel. They married soon afterward. Both Swedish natives, Peter and Anna immigrated to the United States in 1889. Fritz was their first child, born in 1893 with a physical deformity that prevented his full growth. Fritz served as the cook on the W. T. PRESTON snagboat from 1912 to 1952. See WF 5460 for a view of the boat. See WF 0129 for a picture of Fritz as a youngster; see WF 4615 for more information on the family; see Trebon's oral history with Grace Hastie Rydberg done in the fall of 2001.
