Caption Wallie Funk, 1941
Description Wallie V. Funk is pictured in his cap and gown. He was a 1941 graduate of Anacortes High School and went on to study journalism at the University of Washington. Following service in World War II, he graduated in 1948. After traveling in Europe for a year, he learned that the ANACORTES AMERICAN newspaper was for sale. He and John Webber purchased the newspaper from Cornelius and June Root in 1950. Funk and Webber sold the paper in 1964 and then purchased the WHIDBEY NEWS-TIMES and the SOUTH WHIDBEY RECORD, which they owned until 1989. In 1994, Funk began writing a history feature for the ANACORTES AMERICAN, which started as a photograph and cut line, and then grew to a weekly column on Anacortes history.
