Description Portrait of Anacortes businessman John H. Wagner, whose signature is on rear of photo. Wagner owned several businesses on Commercial Avenue - pool hall, confectionary store, cigars and tobacco. When prohibition hit Anacortes in 1916, it changed the nature of some of his business, but only until 1933 when alcohol again become legal. See list of businesses and address below. 1905 Wagner and Larmore Cigars; J. H. Wagner, O. J. Larmore, Commercial between 5th and
[8-17] "A new pool hall, cigars and tobacco. John H. Wagner and company have leased
the ground between the Joker and Iowa saloons (3rd and Commercial) and will at once
commence the erection of a new pool room and cigar and tobacco store."
[9-14] "Louvera to have grand opening Saturday night. John Wagner and Co. have
decided to call their new place the Louvera and grand opening will take place next
Saturday evening. The Louvera will be a fine resort for the thirsty who are seeking
temperance drinks and will carry a fine lie of candies, cigars, nuts, tobaccos, and notions
and will have in connection a fine pool and reading room. The Louvera will be a neatly
conducted place and will handle newspapers, periodicals and magazines and will be so
well managed as to best serve all the public. Mr. Wagner extends an invitation to all to
be present at the opening. The place is a little palace and will no doubt prove a
successful business venture."
