Caption Deception Pass State Park
Description The caption on this image reads, "Deception Pass State Park Picnic, Whidby (sic) Island, Wash." The photo is of people swimming at Cranberry Lake in the park. This site was important to the building of the Deception Pass Bridge as it served as the location for most of the Island County Farm Bureau Picnics which were held every summer from 1919 through the early 1930s. These were a crucial annual event in creating community and political support for the building of Deception Pass Bridge. State senators attended, as did the Governor. The 7-29-1920 ANACORTES AMERICAN reported, "Island picnic is big affair ... Anacortes was almost deserted Sunday afternoon" as 3000 people attended the picnic held under the direction of the Farm Bureau. On 8-13-1925, the paper reported, "Many enjoy farm bureau picnic. Over 2000 people attend picnic. Alfred McBee, Anacortes attorney, delivered address."
