Caption Pioneer Hotel
Description Pioneer Hotel Building at NW corner of 6th and Commercial. Valentine and Barbara Funk stand in front of their hardware store with their new daughter Louise, born 8-8-1903. The building was an assemblage of two structures, including the historic Nobar Hotel which once stood at 2nd and O, and "assembled" by Valentine Funk in 1898; see WF 0075. The Nobar Hotel was built by Charles Haggard in February 1890. The 8-25-1898, ANACORTES AMERICAN reported, "V. Funk has bought the NW corner of 6th and P and will move the old Nobar building to the recently acquired realty and occupy it with his stock of groceries." The 12-8-1898 paper reported, "The Nobar building finally on the move, Mr. Funk having secured the services of 6 experienced housemovers from Seattle. To his acquired lot at corner of 6th and P." The 12-15-1898 issue read, "The No Bar has met with no bar to impede its promenade up P Ave to its new premises." The 12-22-1898 issue reported, "The Nobar is now well placed upon its new foundation the work was so well done that the same parties have secured several other contracts in the city." The 3-30-1899 edition reported, "V. Funk's building at the corner of 6th and P is being remodeled inside and out and when completed will be attractive." The Nobar Building was originally not as wide as the Pioneer Hotel Building and Funk expanded the structure, possibly soon after its move. Soon after, Funk moved his grocery business to the building from 517 P/Commercial and expanded into "Funk Hardware: Groceries, furniture, crockery." The 8-24-1905 paper reported that Funk had sold his hardware business to Davey Brothers of Seattle. The 1905 City Directory lists the Pioneer Hotel on the upper floors of the building with "Emma Jackson, Proprietor." The upper stories were removed from the building in the spring of 1940 and today only the lower floor remains. For other views of the building, see WF 0078, 0116, 0836, 5672.
