Description Photo shows the KATY THOMAS on dry land in disarray. This is the boat that Smuggler Kelly used. A single masted gaff rigged cutter or "sloop", KATY THOMAS was built in 1894 on Waldron Island; sloop# 161054, gross 8.06 tons, net 7.66 tons, length 38' 1", breadth 12", depth 3.6'. It was taken out of the water in the late 1970s or early 1980s. Kelly used the boat from 1894 until his death in 1907. He smuggled wine, opium and even humans from B.C. to various points in WA. He had a cabin on Guemes Island.
