Caption Hagadorn family
Description Will Hagadorn family with William Allard team of oxen and wagon for an outting to Bowman's store. This photo published in December 25, 1909 BELLINGHAM HERALD article which stated that Charles F. Mitchell was in the photo, second from the left. Mitchell came to Fidalgo in 1881. He probably worked on the NORTHWEST ENTERPRISE (1882-1886) and he started the island's first daily newspaper, the ANACORTES PROGRESS, in 1889. The May 3, 1890 ANACORTES AMERICAN reported, "C. F. Mitchell has sold the ANACORTES PROGRESS to W.H. McEwen." Mitchell was a charter member of the Typographical Union in Seattle. [Note: HERALD article printed this image with Charlie's obituary.] Image taken at the foot of Commercial Avenue. Portrait obviously taken same day as WF 0024 where this same family, and ox cart, stand in front of Bowman Store. No identification on original photo, nor in publications of this photo. Hagadorns are, however, attributed to this picture by several locals as well as photo WF 0024; its cut line on p. 14 of September 30, 1954 issue of ANACORTES AMERICAN History issue states that "Will Hagadorn" is pictured loading the wagon. 1880 U.S. Census enumerates Allard, Hagadorns and Tade as neighbors, increasing the liklihood that these are the Hagadorns and they "borrowed" Allard's oxen for the trip to Bowman's store. Wm. and Jemima Hagadorn emigrated to California from Australia in 1849, drawn by the California gold rush; the came to Fidalgo Island in 1877 with Rev. Ewing Tade. Hagadorns were instrumental in operation of the Alden Academy. Wm. Hagadorn died in 1884. At the time of this photo, and 1889 census, the family was as follows: Jemima (63), sons George (34), Wm., Jr. (33), daughters Mary (42), and Emily (27). This picture MAY show George and William at the far left, and Mary and Emily at center.
