Caption Cascade Pass
Description The Anacortes business community saw a North Cross trans-Cascade highway in the vicinity of Cascade Pass east of Marblemount as a vital factor in the town's economic growth. This photo shows one of the annual expeditions into the North Cascades taken by Anacortes business leaders and Chamber of Commerce members during the 1920s and 30s to encourage the state to build a highway. This photo features Anacortes attorney William V. Wells (see WF 0676), Anacortes Bank of Commerce president Fred Cartwright Sr., and realtor Gus Hensler (see WF 3972). Anacortes photographer Charles Judd served as "official photographer" on these outings, and this is probably one of his images. The 3-1-1926, ANACORTES AMERICAN reported, "C. L. Judd is official photographer for Cascade Pass Highway Commission during summers." For more information on this highway movement, see "State-wide interest in completion of highway aroused by pilgrimage" (9-9-1926 edition), "Cascade Pass improvements stressed" (8-30-1928), and "Cascade Pass hike plans great trip" (7-11-1929). See Wallie Funk's photos of this same campaign in 1958 when the North-Cross Caravan went to Olympia to lobby lawmakers for their support.
