Caption unknown older couple
Description This image of an older couple, (c. late 1800's) was a copy order done by Brady for Martha Griffin Mankins, 1892-1976. She was the daughter of Will and Jessie Griffin, and the granddaughter of Almina and John Griffin. Jon, Almina, and their son Will took a claim on the south end of Fidalgo Bay in 1866; Almina was the first white woman to settle on Fidalgo Island, and the island's first schoolteacher. Will Griffin married Jessie May Williams on August 19, 1888 at Rosario. Will Griffin operated a shingle maill and lumber camp o the south side of Anacortes. The 1900 U. S. Census listed: Griffin, Will (40), Jessie (32) and their children: Ernest (10), Martha (8), Edith (6), Leroy (4), and Frederick (2). Martha grew up to marry _______Mankins and she taught at the Fidalgo School on March's Point for many years until the mid-1950s when it closed.
