Caption Deception Pass Bridge construction
Description View of Deception Pass Bridge construction under the direction of Lacey V. Murrow, director of the State Highway Department, and O. L. Elwell, bridge engineer. This view, taken from the beach on the north side of Whidbey Island, is west of the bridge and looks northeast up toward the growing structure. The 450' span over Canoe Pass is complete, having a main span of 350' and having been finished in January 1935. A 235' wooden trestle has been erected between the north and south bridge approaches on Pass Island, and railroad track is laid on it to facilitate building the bridge over Deception Pass; see WF 0636 for a view of the "train car" that ran on these rails. This view shows that bridge already halfway across the waters of the pass, 180' below.
