Anacortes Junk Co. Anacortes, Wa. A truck load of old papers.
Anacortes Junk King-Efthimios "Mike" Demopoulos; born in Greece in July 1889. He came to America when he was 17 (c1906) and settled in Anacortes in 1913, at which time he borrowed $14.00 to help start his business, The Anacortes Junk Co. (later Marine Supply and Hardware). He gathered junk: industrial scrap, chains, old saw blades, newspapers, etc., in a wheelbarrow, later using a horse and wagon and finally trucks. During the World Wars scrap metal was in great demand and the business prospered. He ran the marine store for 68 years, the longest-maintained business by any one person in the county.
