Caption Deception Pass Bridge construction
Description View of Deception Pass bridge construction which began in August 1934. The work began on the Whidbey Island side of the pass, the first step being the excavation of the footing for Pier 1. This view, taken from Rosario, looks east toward the pass and shows that the piers have been completed on the Whidbey side. The work then shifted to Fidalgo Island where the "central plant" and the aggregate bunkers and warehouse were located. As this view shows, work has begun building the bridge approach on the south side of Pass Island. This is a good view of bridge piers on Whidbey and how extensively that area was cleared off in preparation for building the bridge. Work proceeded under the direction of Lacey V. Murrow, director of the State Highway Department, and O. L. Elwell, bridge engineer.
