Caption WALCH, Samuel with garbage truck
Description Samuel Walch was listed in the 1929 and 1937 city directories as a millwright with the Western Cedar Company. He and his wife Ethel lived at 613 35th Street in 1929 and at 1014 26th Street in 1937. He also served as a city garbage collector. Here he is seen standing in front of his garbage truck on the side of Eagle's Hall at 7th and Q Avenue. During this era the city appointed its garbage collectors. They were subsequently sworn in as a deputy health officer and a deputy policeman and swore to enforce the city's sanitary laws. The garbage collector supplied his own rig and they collected their own pay by collecting fees from their customers.
