Caption Sweet & Hawkins Barber Shop
Description Sweet and Hawkins Barber Shop was located at 3rd and Commercial Avenue. First listing for Sweet as a barber appears in 1917 directory, but he was obviously in business before then with Hawkins. On 2-16-1911, the ANACORTES AMERICAN reported, "Sweet and Hawkins Barber Shop move their barber shop into vacant store room adjoining 2nd Hand Store of Uri Parish while their frame block at 3rd and Commercial is being remodeled. An entirely new glass front is to be place in building." Sweet was listed as a barber up through 1921 in the city directory (next one in museum's collection is 1927). He was living in the Pioneer Hotel in 1917. This barber shop offered "BATHS" as seen by sign over doorway at right. Earl Sweet is pictured at far right, the "center chair" barber was Joe Hawkins.
