Description The tug WARRIOR belonged to the Gilkey Brothers Towing Company. Guemes Island is in the rear. Gilkey Brothers Towing (David, Walter, and William Gilkey) began in Anacortes during World War I. In 1920, according to H. W. MCCURDY MARINE HISTORY OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST, p. 306, they "embarked upon an expansion program which was to make their towing fleet one of the largest in the Northwest ... purchasing the 52.5 foot steam cannery tender SOUND of 130 horsepower from the Coast Fish Company of Seattle, for harbor towing, and the steam tug SEA KING from the Shipowners & Merchants Tugboat Company of San Francisco, for Strait and Sound log towing. The SEA KING, built at San Francisco in 1883, was a wooden vessel of 181 tons." The brothers were listed in the 1921 Anacortes city directory, but not as Gilkey Brothers Towing. the 3-10-1925 ANACORTES AMERICAN reported, "Greer-Christy Towing Company amalgamates; Gilkey Towing Company perfected." An on 11-19-1925 the paper reported, "Gilkey Brothers Towing Company purchases waterfront property for dock purposes." This was at 2nd and Q Avenue. The 1926 city directory listed "Gilkey Brothers Towing Company, 2nd and Q: Phone numbers for main office, waiting room, Morrison Boom, Fidalgo Boom." On 11-21-1926, the Gilkey's tug BAHADA exploded near Huckleberry Point, killing its entire crew of 9; it was not salvaged as of the following January. The 7-11-1929 paper reported that Gilkey Towing Company merged with Puget Sound Tug and Barge of Seattle. The business continued to be known as Gilkey Brothers Towing until the mid-1940s. The 1948 city directory no longer listed the business, and William Gilkey was listed as a dispatcher for Pacific Tow Boat Company; see WF 5448, 5449. See also WF 2365, 3896, 3897.
