Caption Fire Department "Contest Team"
Description Brady took three images of this scene and labeled the front of the negative sleeve: "Firemen Contest Team." This was most likely a team for a "firemen's muster" where crews from different fire departments would get together and compete in different fire fighting skills. On the front of WF 1837, written in red ink, are the names, left to right: "Bill, Mert, Bert". Bill was Bill Beale. Bert was probably Albert "Bert" Verrall. Born in England in 1891, Verrall immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1893. He served as Anacortes Fire Chief in 1950. In the 1930 census, however, he listed his occupation as "shingle packer" at a shingle mill. See also WF 1837, 1839, 4827.
