Caption First airmail in Anacortes
Description This photo shows a 1909 automobile picking up the first load of mail from the Anacortes Post Office at 6th and Commercial, en route to March's Point Airfield. Left to right: Postmaster Gus Dalstead stands by the car, Mayor Joe Hagan sits in the rear of the car, and "two town pretties" (Norine Oldow and Catherine Mueller)(9-11-1947 ANACORTES AMERICAN) handle the car and mail for the trip to March's Point. The paper reported that air mail service had come to Fidalgo Island with the advent of Airmail Route 77, which "comprised five segments in western Washington and Oregon." One of those segments went north from Seattle to Everett, Mt. Vernon, Anacortes, and Bellingham. Air mail service began on Fidalgo Island on 9-10-1947 aboard West Coast Airlines, which had established regular service to March's Point Airfield aboard their twin-engine DC-3 Scenic Liners capable of carrying 24 passengers. The first official air mail delivery in the United States took place on 5-15-1918 aboard a Curtiss JN-4 "Jenny" from Washington, D. C., to New York. One of the first mentions of airmail service in Anacortes was reported in the 3-25-1926 paper which stated that Anacortes now enjoyed air mail service but ... the mail was then sent from Anacortes to Pasco by rail car and from there by "aeroplane." The 9-11-1947 paper reported, "Air mail speeds letters here from all over country." The article also reported times between cancellation stamps on letters, and when they arrived in Anacortes. Most letters mailed by air mail got to Anacortes the day after they were mailed.
