The May 24, 1917 edition of the GUEMES BEACHCOMBER states that [within 3 weeks] actual work will be started on the Sloan Shipyard on Guemes Island for Sloan had been awarded a contract for the building of a number of ships. The June 14, 1917 edition states that surveying the yard and laying out the ways, the railroad tracks, roads, mill & powerhouse had commended. The June 12, 1923 edition of the GUEMES BEACHCOMBER has a headline reading: "Shipyard to be Only a Memory".
