Caption Banquet
Description This banquet, held on 11-25-1890, celebrated establishment of "Transcontinental connection with Fidalgo Island and city of New York." On 11-27-1890, the ANACORTES AMERICAN devoted the entire front page to this event with a banner headline: "Ocean to Ocean - Fidalgo and Manhattan Island the Extreme Terminals -- From Anacortes to New York by Rail - Completion of the NPRR to Anacortes and Arrival of its First Train through City." (Note: this was not the first train to in Anacortes. See WF 0005 for photo of that event. WF 0006 is a celebration of the completion "of the northern extension of the Lake Shore Railroad", a branch line of the Northern Pacific.) The banquet was held in Oregon Improvement Company's 60' x 100' warehouse on Ocean Wharf at the foot of P Avenue. The ANACORTES AMERICAN reported, "Decorations were brilliant; interior draped with bunting and large flags intermingled with innumerable Chinese lanterns." Note banner hanging on wall at rear which states, "Anacortes Population January 1890, 317 Population; Nov. 25, 1890, Over 2200." 540 guests attended the banquet and a full report of noted guests and the speeches given were published in the 11-27-1890 ANACORTES AMERICAN.
