Caption Antares and Altair
Description Color enlarged photocopy of bows of trawlers, ANTARES and ALTAIR tied up at the dock. ANTARES, launched in 1978 was Dakota Creek's first boat. Dakota Creek Industries was a new boat building company originally formed to build crab boats for Jeff Hendricks and his partners. The ANTARES and the ALTAIR were two of five Anacortes boats called the "A Boats"; In 1981 the "A Boats" were converted to do trawling as well as crabbing. Less than 5 years old, the ANTARES sank in March of 1982. Disaster struck again with the "A boats" on February 14, 1983. The AMERICUS and ALTAIR capsized north of Dutch Harbor in the Bering Sea. All fourteen crewmembers lost their lives.
