Caption Tuna canning - affixing labels
Description No identification came with this negative except "tuna canning." Judging from the uniforms worn by the women, the era is the 1930s. The first Anacortes cannery to pack tuna was the Sebastian Stuart Canning Company, located a D Avenue and 9th Street. The October 5, 1939, ANACORTES AMERICAN reported that Sebastian Stuart planned to employ 80 people to pack tuna and noted, "The cannery was the first north of California to pack the 'chicken of the sea' when it started two years ago." This view shows women affixing labels to cans.
