Description This view shows P Avenue (later named Commercial Avenue) in the process of being planked. Railroad tracks run down the street; rail service on the Seattle and Northern in Anacortes began on 8-5-1890. Businesses in view on right side of street include (at far end of the street): Garuthers, Reid and Beard Real Estate and Skagit County Abstract Company. This is the earliest view of W. G. Beard's business, Skagit Country Abstract; Beard came to Anacortes from Michigan in 1890 and opened the business, which, by January 1891, was housed in the Platt Building; Beard later served as postmaster and Anacortes mayor. See also WF 0070. Hardware store on right corner is probably that of George McIntosh, who advertised in 1891 City Directory as selling "Hardware, stoves, tinware." These businesses were all listed in the 1890 or 1891 Anacortes City Directory. McKenzie Real Estate is visible on far left side of photo. J. O. Booen's label is partially visible on lower edge of photo.See also WF 0043, 0224.
