Caption March's Point road
Description Charles Judd photo showing road on northeast tip of March's Point. View looks east across Padilla Bay to Bay View. Point originally mapped as "Sachem Point" by Charles Wilkes's 1842 U.S. Exploring Expedition. The point was of great significance to local Indians, who had several villages here and regularly burned over the point's natural prairie lands to encourage growth of native edible plants. The first recorded whites to settle on Fidalgo Island, and Skagit County, did so on March's Point, despite the fact that the peninsula was promised to local Indians as part of the Swinomish Indian Reservation in the 1855 Point Elliot Treaty. First white to settle on the tip of this point was O. V. Russell. Remembered as "a quiet, peaceable, harmless old man", Russell was found "cruelly and barbarously murdered on the beach at his residence" on July 29, 1863. [P. R. Jeffcott, NOOKSACK TAILS AND TRAILS, p. 414.] Hiram March, of Whatcom, subsequently filed on Russell's claim. James Kavanaugh, a resident of Whatcom who would move to March's Point in1865, noted in his diary on August 28, 1863, "Commenced taking down a house in Whatcom with [Hiram] March. He intends taking it to his claim on Perry's Island." (Perry's Island was the name given to Fidalgo Island by U. S. Exploring Expedition.) March moved onto NE tip of island, just around the corner of this road, and to the right of where this photo stops; see home WF 0543. The point subsequently became known as March's Point. This spot became a popular recreation spot for island residents in early 1900s. august 24, 1916, ANACORTES AMERICAN reported, "March's Point Popular Bathing and Outing Place." Photo published in august 6, 1959, ANACORTES AMERICAN Pioneer Edition, sect. 2-7. For more information on March's Point and its settlement, see FIRST VIEWS: AN EARLY HISTORY OF SKAGIT COUNTY, pps. x, 1-40.
