|Caption||Harry Smith and freshmen boy classmates|
Harry Smith is the focus of this picture from the 1939 annual, page 33. The freshman class is posed on the steps of Columbian School, and he is the smallest boy with a tie in the center of the front row. Harry Smith (1923-1991) was "an artist whose activities and interests put him at the center of the mid twentieth-century American avant-garde. Although best known as a filmmaker and musicologist, he frequently described himself as a painter, and his varied projects called on his skills as an anthropologist, linguist and translator. He had a life-long interest in the occult and exoteric fields of knowledge." [The source of this quote is unknown.] He was born May 29, 1923, in Portland, Oregon. His early childhood was spent in Anacortes where his father was a manager or watchman for a salmon cannery. He and his family moved to Bellingham during or following his junior year; he graduated from Bellingham High School. Following his work as an experimental filmmaker in San Francisco, Smith moved permanently to New York City in 1950. One of his greatest contributions to American culture came in the form of his Anthology of American Folk Music, issued by Folkways Records in 1952. See more information about his life in the folder.
