|Caption||Anacortes from Cap Sante|
View from Cap Sante toward northwest, downtown Anacortes, and Guemes Island. Several important structures are visible. Left to right: corner of Wilson Hotel at 8th and Commercial; Methodist Episcopal Church (left of tall tree at center) on corner of 8th and R; above is St. Mary Catholic church at 7th Street and N Avenue (1202 7th Street); just to right, I.O.O.F./Opera House on 6th between O and N (tall white building with 3rd story at rear); Pioneer Hotel on NW corner of Commercial and 6th (white building); Vendome Hotel on NE corner of Commercial and 6th (white building with black dome); to left of Vendome is ANACORTES AMERICAN building at corner of 6th and Q; 2 other Commercial Avenue business visible. The tall tree at center of photo points at Charles Werner's Capital Grocery; to the right is The Racket (see WF 0071,0072); both businesses had moved to Commercial between 6th and 7th by 1905. The railroad trestle is visible across the bay; small piers remaining to the east of the trestle may be remnants of Cap Sante motor bridge that was dismantled in 1896. The 4-23-1896 ANACORTES AMERICAN reported, "The motor bridge between 10th St. and Cap Sante is being dismantled. Workmen have removed the planking and doubtless the heavy timbers will follow." The date of the photo is based on the lack of Moyer's Keystone Building at NE corner of 7th and Commercial Avenue; the first Moyer building was built in 1891 and dismantled about 1906, while the second (and current) Moyer "Keystone" Building was completed in 1910.
