Caption Deception Pass Bridge construction
Description View of Deception Pass bridge construction which began in August 1934. The work began on the Whidbey Island side of the pass, the first step being the excavation of the footing for Pier 1. This view, taken from Fidalgo Island, looks south toward Pass Island. Note two men standing on bridge girder in center of photo. It shows the bridge piers completed on Whidbey and Pass Island, the partially constructed bridge approach on the south side of Pass Island, and the partially constructed bridge over Canoe Pass. Work proceeded under the direction of Lacey V. Murrow, director of the State Highway Department, and O. L. Elwell, bridge engineer.
