Caption Minstrel Show: Empire Theater
Description This photo is of a theatrical Minstrel Show at the Empire Theater featuring white performers in blackface. It is unknown if this show was performed by a local group, i.e. Anacortes High School students, Elks, Eagles, etc, all of whom performed minstrel shows in blackface at one time or another, or a traveling minstrel show. The blackface minstrel show or character appears in numerous Ferd Brady photos, from children participating in the Marineers' Pageant "Kiddy Parades" of the 1930s and 40s, to Anacortes High School theatrical presentations. See WF 1392.013, 1392.016, 1745-8. The entertainment genre frequently appeared in Anacortes from the 1890s through the 1930s. See the 3-9-1905 ANACORTES AMERICAN article "Minstrel Show Fine Success," and the 5-20-1926 issue's "Minstrel show to benefit municipal band at Empire Theater." Also see WF 1713.
