Caption Marineer Parade - Eagles float
Description Marineers' Pageant Parade is of the float from Fraternal Order of Eagles #249 on Commercial between 4th and 5th. Young girls pose as Queen and princesses atop the float. Aerie #249 was organized in Anacortes on August 19, 1902 with 45 members and grew to over 1000 members by the 1920s; see WF 1196. This is an excellent view of the lower portion of the Platt Building on this corner which was built in 1890 by Anacortes banker John Platt; his Bank of Anacortes failed in the catastrophic financial Panic of 1893. Mansfield Stevedoring is visible on the ground floor of the building. Harry Mansfield was an important figure in the Anacortes community. After working on the Anacortes waterfront, he began his own stevedoring company in 1928. This was an important first for labor in the business that was transacted on the waterfront, and with the newly created Port of Anacortes. The 11-8-1928 ANACORTES AMERICAN reported, "Anacortes does its own stevedoring now." He initially began in the Taylor Hotel Building. By 1934 he had moved to this office in the Platt (Wells) Building, a move that put him in the center of the Anacortes labor headquarters. The office of the Cannery Workers Union was on the second floor of the building, and the office of the International Longshoremen's Association was at 401 Commercial. At the time this photo was taken, he was just completing a term as Anacortes mayor, having been elected in 1935. He also served as an agent for Shell Oil Company; see his portrait WF 4202. At the time of this photo, the empty storefront south of Mansfield's office had been recently vacated by the Mayflower Bakery; that particular storefront in the building was home to several bakeries. Further south, the shoe business of Severt Oakland is at 406 Commercial. See WF 1622 for another view of Oakland's Shoe Repair. Note the sign for Dr. Davidson, Dentist, on the second floor of the Platt Building. See also, WF 1197, 1341, 1407, 1431, 1456, 1457, 1465, 1534, 1744-8.
