Caption 1940 Marineer Pageant Royalty coronation
Description This image from the 1940 Marineers' Pageant is of the queen and her court at the coronation ceremonies at the Causland Park Pavilion. Left to right: Princess Enid Rock, Anacortes Mayor Charles Peters, Queen Marguerite Veloni, and Princess Marie Bozanich. This was the first year that the coronation ceremonies were held at Causland Park. This was also the year that the committee changed how the queen was chosen. Instead of deciding by which girl sold the most Pageant tickets, the decision was made by popular vote; see 5-23-1940 ANACORTES AMERICAN. Merchants now sponsored each girl. Lyle Marchant of Lyle's Grocery sponsored the winning queen, Marguerite Veloni. The Empire Theater sponsored Marie Bozanich; see WF 1779. See WF 1594-5 for other view of this coronation. See a 1957 photo of Marguerite Veloni Moen in her garden -- WF 1950-2002 photos, PEOPLE: Moen, Marguerite.
