Caption Miss Washington reception
Description Reception for Norine Chabai [Baker], Miss Washington of 195?, at home of Dr. Lyle and Doris Packard; the house was demolished December 3, 2012 was on the east side of Cap Sante at the end of 5th Street, on the south side of the street where it meets the water. Miss Chabai had been the Marineers' Pageant queen for the 1949 pageant (see WF 1633-1637), and followed up that success with a run for the Miss Washington title. She is shown pictured in the center of the image, wearing a coat over her gown. Directly behind her, wearing a striped top, appears to be Marguerite Veloni, Marineers' Pageant queen in 1940. In the front row, second from right, is Washington State Governor Arthur B. Langley, who was serving his second term as governor. Also staning in the front row, fourth and fifth from right, behind children, are Dr. Lyle and Doris Packard. Packard was an Anacortes dentist; Doris Packard was in charge of many of the Marineers' Pageant royalty events; see WF 1298, 4422, 4423. Both Packards were active in Anacortes civic affairs. Gus Dalstead, Anacortes postmaster, is on far left side in the second row. Men in uniform are from Naval Air Station Whidbey. See also, WF 0326, 0328.
