Caption Pavilion - location unknown
Description This is a series of five photos, WF 1723-1727 and possibly 1728, that Brady took of a rustic outdoor pavilion, the purpose of which is unknown. It does not appear to have been in or near Anacortes. An indication of its location may be found on the table in the foreground of WF 1724; place cards or placemats at each place setting say, "San Juan Island", indicating this pavilion was located there. The only signs in the room that give any indication of its purpose are: a wooden board running across the top of the fireplace says, "Friendship's Fires are Always Burning," and a small sign on the far right side of the photo, only partially legible, says, "Guests .... Temple of the Gods." (?) The rustic structure had a large open fireplace at one end and a two-story structure at the opposite end; see WF 1724. It appears to have been slightly sunken from ground level; note the stairs rising up out of the dining area on the far right side of WF 1723, as well as rising out of the upper right corner, behind the organ and under the American flag. Its roof appears to have been both a canvas type of awning for bad weather, as well as a natural vine covering for less inclement weather; see WF 1726, 1727. The facility obviously had the capacity of serving meals to large crowds of people. WF 1723 shows its appearance prior to guests arriving; it is decorated with flags from different nations. Note the star-covered flag or blanket near the fireplace which appear in all the photos. It this pavilion is located in the San Juan Islands, it is possible that this was a gathering of the Anacortes Chamber of Commerce men and their wives, or of the Rotarians who frequently took excursions to the San Juans and Victoria during the 1910s and 1920s in an effort to improve tourist and business relations between those communities and Anacortes.
