Caption 20th and J from roof of Anacortes High School
Description Anacortes High School was constructed in 1931 at 1600 20th. It was just south of the Columbian School, which had served Anacortes students since 1892. In 1931, 83% of Anacortes voters approved spending $90,000 to build a new high school. The 9-2-1931 ANACORTES AMERICAN reported the high school's completion and its dedication ceremonies on 9-5-1931. It opened the following Monday for 271 students in grades 10, 11, and 12. Some Works Progress Administration (WPA) funds and labor were used in constructing the school. This view was taken from the roof, looking southeast to the intersection of J Avenue and 20th Street. A corner of the football field is seen on the left side of the image.
