Caption McFadden and Deane families
Description Portrait taken of a family picnic at Alexander Beach held in honor of Dewey McFadden (in sailor uniform) on his last day prior to his departure for World War I. This family portrait includes Henry, Lillian, Dewey, and Gilbert McFadden, with their mother, Sarah McFadden, and Charles and Tillie McFadden Deane. The 1917 city directory listed the family at 1420 18th Street. Sarah was the widow of Gilbert McFadden; her children Dewey and Henry lived with her. Henry worked as a carpenter. Tillie McFadden Deane was Dewey's sister, and the mother of the donor of this photo, Lavern Deane. According to a telephone interview with Teresa Trebon on 12-18-2003, Lavern recalled, "Dewey was my favorite uncle. He was a great guy. He returned from the war and was a foreman at the Morrison Mill. When he retired, he built a fishing boat." For more on Lavern Deane, see WF 3709.
