Caption Best homestead on Guemes Island
Description Pictured left to right in wagon: Will Robe, Alice White, Samuel and Elizabeth Best. Columbus Best is standing by the fence. Samuel and Elizabeth Best homesteaded 160 acres on the north shore of Lake Campbell in 1872. Best was Whatcom County Commissioner 1874-1875; he repeatedly called for temperance measures in the county (7-24-1875 Bellingham Bay Mail), complained about tax complainers who would not sign their names in their letter to the newspaper (9-4-1875) and on 12-22-1883 wrote a great description of Fidalgo and its population, stating, "Our motto is no liquor of any kind. No hunters with dogs. No saloonist for office. No man for office that votes against woman suffrage and for liquor. In short, we prefer total abstainers for all offices, more schoolhouses, and no saloons." (NORTHWEST ENTERPRISE). On 4-5-1916, Best was profiled in U. W. History Professor Edmond Meany;s column in the Seattle P.I., "Living Pioneers of Washington." The Bests had no children but raised Alice from age 5 to adulthood; she was the daughter of Robert and Charlotte White of LaConner. Robert White died in 1882, leaving Charlotte with five children. Alice was sent to the Bests and lived with them until her 1895 marriage to Antone Christianson, also a Lake Campbell settler. This photo is from her collection. [See Cahail "Pioneers" article in 5-21-1942 ANACORTES AMERICAN.] They also raised Will Robe but nothing further is known of him. Columbus Best was the brother of Samuel Best; the brothers both had their homes photographed the same day (see WF 0026). On 7-1-1882 the NORTHWEST ENTERPRISE reported that Samuel Best was "probably the largest sheep owner on the island," and was "busily engaged running in his sheep and preparing to shear."
